HOA Homeowners: Frustrated, Powerless, or Confused?

About this book

A Better Governance System Is Finally at Hand

Many homeowners move into an HOA expecting an attractive, well-maintained community where neighbors share common interests. Instead, some discover poor communication, limited transparency, inconsistent enforcement, weak accountability, and a governing system in which homeowners can feel they have very little influence. This book asks an important question: What if these recurring problems are not simply the result of a bad board, a difficult manager, or an occasional poor decision? What if many of the problems homeowners experience are built into the way traditional HOA governance operates? HOA Homeowners: Frustrated, Powerless, or Confused? examines the structural weaknesses that can allow HOA communities to become board-centric rather than homeowner-centered. It looks beyond individual disputes and personalities to the governance system itself and explains why changing the people in charge does not always change the outcome. More importantly, the book introduces a different approach: a governance structure designed to increase communication, homeowner participation, accountability, and homeowner influence. The objective is not endless confrontation with the board. It is creating a community in which homeowners play a meaningful role in the association that serves them. If you have ever wondered why your HOA seems so difficult to change—or whether there might be a better way to govern an HOA—this book provides a place to begin.
